Standing on the rocky tip of Baie des Fourmis, Villa Kerylos is an invitation to a journey and a tribute to Greek civilisation.
Erected between1902 and 1908, Villa Kerylos is a unique reconstruction of an ancient Greek building. It is the achievement of a dream made by a lover of Ancient Greece, Théodore Reinach- an archeologist and patron of the arts- associated to the flawless collaboration with Emmanuel Pontremoli, a passionate inspired architect. Villa Kerylos is a faithful replica of Greek noble houses built on the island of Delos in the 2nd century B.C. Théodore Reinach and Emmanuel Pontremoli had the idea of combining the atmosphere of an antique luxurious Greek Villa with the modernity of the Belle Epoque Villa.
Fine precious materials were used such as stucco, Carrara marble and exotic wood for the furniture. The decoration is just sumptuous, with its mosaics and frescoes depicting famous scenes which illustrate great legends of Gods and classical heroes.
Kerylos means Halcyon or tern and refers to a poetic mythical bird regarded as a bird of good omen.See the site
